Bike water bottles –what you should buy

Bike water bottles are essentials of all bikers – they are especially adorable to long range bicyclists. Read ahead to know what your options are…

Aluminum bottles 

There are smart 1 liter aluminum bottles widely used by bicyclists. These bottles come with 3.15" diameter. On the first thought, they may look like slightly bigger than the cup holder of your car. Still, you shouldn’t find much of a problem fitting those into your fanny pack pockets.  

If you are looking for a well engineered model, look for one that has great looking exterior – there are a range of colors/designs available. The interior of these bottles are usually coated to make sure that the water inside the bottle is protected from the adverse unhealthy effects of the aluminum. Such coating is usually proprietary, and the manufacturers usually keep the ‘formula’ hidden since they consider it a ‘trade secret’.  Be sure to buy an aluminum bottle that says it’s okay to store water in it for long term.  

To help fit the bottle in your bike better, most models come with loop top screws onto the caps in addition to gasket seals. Make sure you are buying a product that comes with comfy thread that crosses easily. Most bikers prefer bike water bottles with larger openings. And the opening has to be extra smooth to make sure your mouth doesn’t hurt while drinking. Here’s a summery of the features you should look for: 

• They should be extremely high quality   
• The aluminum (preferably light) on the exterior should be slightly insulated   
• The inside should be covered with high quality and risk free powder coat to prevent leaching   
• Should fit well with other activities in addition to bicycling    
• The water in it should not change it’s original taste or smell even after a couple of hours – quality products keep water just like it was when it poured from the tap!   
• Even better, if it comes with a cap-type top (suits well for children)   
• Should be leak proof   
• For longer version cycling, take 1.5L bottles. But if you want to go for shorter versions, you can pick anything from .5L to 1L capacity.
